THE GREAT CHEESE CAMINO
The principality of Asturias is associated with the pilgrimage known as El Camino De Santiago and although the route moves through other regions, the Asturian capital, Oviedo, is regarded as the starting point.
It’s also the place to base yourself if you’re on a pilgrimage of a different kind – discovering the area’s famous food and drink. Oviedo is constantly abuzz with walkers and locals, and you’ll often find them enjoying the local cider, or , produced from apples grown in the ancient orchards of the area. In fact, there’s a whole area of bars and restaurants, known as Cider Boulevard (Calle Gascona), dedicated to the apple nectar of the gods. Beware is not carbonated, so the liquid is poured from the bottle into a glass from a height sufficient to release a small amount of natural, dissolved carbonation – it’s lost so quickly that you have no choice but to down it!
