Milk Money

IT’S all about memories of the good times and good mates wrapped up in ‘Milk Money’, a 1937 Chevrolet Gasser Class drag car built by Invercargill custom engineer Hayden (Ophy) Ophuis and mates.

The Gasser was completed in their spare time after first helping finish fellow club member Jock McGilvray’s 1948 Chevrolet Pickup when he became too ill to complete it. Jock passed away on 8 November 2019, but not before he could drive his pickup a handful of times and make a sizable contribution to building Milk Money, as Ophy explains.

Jock told me, “That motor has to stay with the car and you boys have fun with it. I’ve always owned the car, but before he passed away, Jock came and saw me and said that his motor was staying with my car. So, in a way, he did give it to me but then in a way, it’s sort of all of ours, and I didn’t want to take sole ownership of it.”
