Crawling on the floor, my then 18-month-old, Emily, was going from one end of the house to the other.

My stepdaughter Ella, then seven, was crouched beside her, guiding Emily’s journey.

‘Careful, Emmy,’ Ella said, moving any obstacles out of her way to make sure she didn’t get hurt.

She was always fussing over Emily. Ella even helped me change nappies, give Emily her bottles and sometimes bathe her.
