A mug's game: Ravilious, Dunbar Hay and Wedgwood

Ravilious's most successful partnership with a commercial client was with Wedgwood, starting in 1936 with the Coronation mug.) was on sale at Dunbar Hay before his abdication-Mrs Simpson being one of the first clients. The design was later revised and reissued for the coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II. Ravilious designed several tea and dinner services, including Persephone (1936), Travel (1938) and Garden (1938). The plate in Alphabet, a children's breakfast set (1937), is embellished with witty symbols running from Aeroplane to Xylophone, with Y and Z reserved for the egg cup. Among his other classic designs are the Boat Race Day bowl (1938) and a lemonade set of jug and mugs, Garden Implements (1939).
