How the west was won

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful places in Britain – a fairytale landscape of mountains, rivers, lakes and pretty villages. But turn up on a sunny day in summer and the thing you are most likely to see is the exhaust pipe of the car in front. As anyone who decided to staycation in the Lakes during the period of Covid travel restrictions will attest, the National Park can get very busy at peak times. It is still possible to escape the crowds, however, if you know where to look.

If you ask me – and you should, because I’m a local – the western parts of the Lake District are the most scenic and wild. The roads are typically quieter here than over in the touristy areas around Windemere and Ambleside, and in my opinion they offer a truer to be like.
