Portraits in charcoal

I draw on a vertical surface and work standing up at the easel. Before I start, I spend some time looking at my model or photo reference and make some observations about the pose, the person’s morphology and any particular aspects to consider. For my demonstration portrait on pages 64-65 I used the Andrew Loomis method, which I believe to be a very efficient and quick way to put down the base.
The Loomis method is about deconstructing the head into its basic forms, mainly a sphere as the cranium and a block as the jaw. I start the drawing by using soft Nitram charcoal, held very lightly, as it is easy to
