Understanding oil painting brushes

In general, oil paints can be applied with a whole range of brushes, natural or synthetic, long-handled or short. The choice is vast and can be confusing, particularly if you are relatively new to oil painting. Most oil painting brushes will have long handles, which allow you to paint standing back from your easel, and short handles can be useful if you’re adding detail, so you probably won’t need very many of these!
