IN THE same way that good manners, French cuisine and – despite what my wife might think – corduroy jackets will never go out of style, neither will the interior space offered by an estate car. Even if fashions in automobile design change and more economical engines come along, a practical car should, in theory, remain just as practical in ten, 20 or even 30 years.

But can the space be updated? Can practicality be improved upon? To discover if it can we’re comparing an original XF Sportbrake with a recently facelifted current model.
