Sutton Hoo

WHAT IS SUTTON HOO?

Located on the banks of a river estuary near the Suffolk coast, Sutton Hoo is the site of an early medieval cemetery dating from the sixth and seventh centuries AD. Far more than that, however, it is one of history’s most spectacular archaeological finds; a rich treasure trove the likes of which has rarely been discovered anywhere in Europe. The hundreds of artefacts have deepened our understanding of the early medieval period in England.

While Sutton Hoo is best known for a magnificent ship burial – inside which was found the ornately decorated helmet that has become an icon of the Anglo-Saxons – there are actually multiple burial mounds at the site. Erosion over the centuries, and plundering by treasure hunters, means that some have been lost, while others have yet to be excavated. There could be much more to unearth from those Suffolk fields.
