A Norfolk trio

Before you reach the Norfolk border on the A11, you pass the Elveden War Memorial, which has stood sentry over the gateway to the county since 1921. The 30m-high Corinthian column has, over the past century, been a bystander to many a changing time and watched the comings and goings of quiet country life rambling along around it.

One of the events it almost certainly witnessed was the arrival of the Chinese water deer after their escape from Woburn led to them establishing a significant population in the UK around the time of the end of World War II.
