The landmark recording of Beethoven’s complete symphonies by was the first by a modern orchestra to follow ‘authentic’ performance practices. Here, on CD for the first time, are several of their live recordings, including polished and light-footed accounts of ’s Fifth and Seventh. The real draw of this 4-CD set, though, are the and discs. Mozart’s Symphony Serenade. Their Haydn also has bags of character and affection – and, in the Symphony, ferocious menace. Their Four is well-detailed in terms of instrumental colour, but is rather short of the passion found by such great conductors as Klemperer.
