Much ado about mulch

In forests, mulch doesn’t come in bags. Plants shed leaves, limbs, bark and petals, while low-growing flora blankets the soil. So why not borrow ideas as well as materials from nature for your own garden?

Technically speaking, anything covering the soil’s surface, including dung and stones, can act as a mulch. However, not all mulches are created equal. The best kinds are natural and coarse, allowing for good airflow and water penetration.
