A brush with flame

One of the most recognisable of Australian flowers, the many species in the genus Callistemon are commonly known as bottlebrushes for their bright, fluffy flower spikes.

They are also very adaptable plants that will tolerate all sorts of environmental punishment from frosts and poorly drained soils, making them a very useful addition to any Australian garden.

Bottlebrushes belong to the gumtree family Myrtaceae and are closely related to melaleucas, with which they share the distinctive flower shape.

While some botanical authorities now, based on recent genetic analyses the general consensus seems to be that is still valid.
