CLASS 20

Type 1s Nos. 20189+20205 set off from Derby RTC on January 14 bound for Leeds to collect New Measurement Train power car No. 43014 from Neville Hill depot and return it to the Loram facility. Four days later the Class 20s ‘tailed’ the 5Q20 19.05 Crewe CS-Kirkdale TMD hauled by Hanson & Hall Class 50 No. 50008 and conveying Merseyrail EMU No. 777005, while attracting plenty of interest from photographers along the way, despite the hour! The translator wagons were taken to King’s Norton next day before the ‘20s’ headed back to Derby. Their next outing was on January 24 with the 6X20 10.43 Toton Yard-Butterley with a YDA and Railvac machine No.3.

Fresh from a repaint while still retaining green livery, No. 20007 along with No. 20142 undertook training runs between Eastleigh and Fareham on January 20 and the next day. The pair travelled north to Derby RTC on January 26 and the following Sunday had charge of the 6X40 14.06 Butterley-Toton, picking up Railvac 3 taken to the Midland Railway Centre two days earlier by classmates Nos. 20189+20205.

Two other green examples, Locomotive Services’ Nos. 20107+ 20096, departed from Crewe bound for Carlisle on January 27. Accelerating away from Crewe station the pair emitted enough smoke to hide a passing ‘Pendolino’ – ironically the green ‘climate change’ set No. 390121. Moving on to Bo’ness next day, the pair collected Nos. 37703+20302+20305 ready for a trip to LS’s base at Crewe, running as 0Z17 and departing from Bo’ness at 12.42.

CLASS 37

On hire to Colas, No. 37402 powered the 3Z60 12.00 Derby RTC-Reading Triangle ultrasonic test train on January 2 and four days later with similar vehicles formed the 3Q71 22.37 Derby RTC-Crewe CSFL, before retiring to Carlisle Kingmoor depot for the remainder of January. No. 37716 conveyed an ultrasonic test train over the Settle & Carlisle line (Blea Moor at 16.00) on January 9, while another Direct Rail Services Type 3, No. 37218, came to
