ou can’t tell by look or feel: breast density is assessed by mammogram X-ray and refers to the amount of dense tissue versus fatty tissue within the breast. A lumpy, fibrous-feeling breast may not have particularly high density: breast radiologist Sally Urry says there can be confusion, as sometimes the word “dense” is used interchangeably to describe both “feel” and what the mammogram shows.
