In fact, I saw two of them almost a thousand miles apart. The first, known as De Zwaan (The Swan), was in Holland, Michigan; the second, known as the Hay-ground Windmill, was in East Hampton Village, New York. Both have interesting histories, but only De Zwaan still operates as a working grist mill, grinding wheat, corn and rye into flour.
I’d brought my wife and daughter to the town of Holland (named for the area’s Dutch roots) to experience the Tulip Time Festival, an annual May event. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, the town annually imports and plants nearly a million tulip bulbs (over 120 varieties) in parks, shopping centers, front yards, back yards, alongside streets and alleys, and everywhere else, including Windmill Island
