LAYING LUMBER
Reference is made to reader Meaney’s question on alternate power plants for M123 trucks.
I am familiar with a lumber mill in Lebanon, PA which has two M 123 chassis that have been heavily modified for use in the woodlot. They are favored for this work owing to the high ground clearance bestowed by 24” tires and the live kingpin front axle.
One still has the 903 Cummins in it. The other one has an ENDT675 Mack six-cylinder inline engine in it. I assume the 903 was wiped out and it was too expensive to repair, and as Mack engines are plentiful in PA, they did the switch. I assume they used the bellhousing and clutch from the 903 to effect the swap. They may have had to modify the front motor mount and the radiator to make this work. A Mack END 864 would probably also work, if you can
