Fitting Tribute
DEREK hesitated outside the florists. He and Maggie had agreed to buy a wreath spelling out ‘Mom’ but he had another idea, he thought, hoped, would be a more fitting tribute to his mother-in-law.
He also hoped that despite her grief it might put a smile on his wife’s face. Derek too missed his mother-in-law enormously, but was trying to obey her wish of being remembered with the happiness she’d enjoyed throughout her 93 years. He remembered her too with gratitude.
Derek once attended a beginner’s pottery club, where he’d made mugs. His first attempt was rather clumsy, but his own mother would like it because he’d made it and it was decorated in fiery red with ‘Mom’ picked out in rich orange – her favourite colours.
His second mug was much neater and glazed in brilliant cobalt blue. ‘Skylar’
