Yesterday once more

As we drove up the autobahn towards Lüneburg Heath, I was reminded of when I did the same journey at 200kmph (124mph) in my new boyfriend’s Alfa Romeo sports car. Forty-five years later and now married to that boyfriend, I was much more relaxed driving the same route at sensible speeds in our motorhome. This was to be a return trip to areas I knew well in my youth and the start of rediscovering some of my favourite haunts in the German province of Lower Saxony.
On the way to the heath, we stopped to pay our respects at the infamous World War II concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen, strolling along footpaths that wound their way through beautiful woodland. In open spaces, concrete markers showed where the many wooden huts had been.
We passed some of the 13 mass graves standing testament to the thousands of people who perished at the camp. In one section of this vast memorial site, individual headstones have been erected to
