Shattered beliefs
CANTICLE CREEK, by Adrian Hyland (Ultimo Press, $36.99)
decade before Jane Harper tugged the wider reading world’s attention towards “outback noir”, Adrian Hyland earned a Ned Kelly Award for a debut inspired by living and working in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. Indigenous sleuth Emily Tempest returned in an excellent sequel, then, a small-town mystery laced with wit, intriguing characters and a vivid sense of rural Victoria. Constable Jesse Redpath is charged with keeping the peace in Kulara in the Northern Territory. When Adam Lawson gets in trouble, Jesse shepherds the young Aboriginal man towards community service with her artist father, instead of jail time. When Adam dies in a car crash in Victoria and is suspected of killing his girlfriend, Jesse’s guilt and confusion take her south to butt heads with cops, criminals and the Canticle Creek community. A deft tale from a masterful storyteller whose experiences as a rural firefighter add authenticity and menace.
