Like death warmed up
January is a tough month. Following Christmas festivities, we are back out again in the field. The days are getting longer and in the roe deer management calendar we are in the second half of doe season. Most of us are behind with our cull plan and pressure is mounting. Embryos that have been in suspended animation since the rut have now activated and are growing inside every doe. It is critical that the cull plan is in good shape by mid-February. I, for one, do not enjoy culling gravid does in March. Though January is usually cold and miserable, this year it was peculiarly warm and dry. This creates unforeseen complications when it comes to lowland deer management.
