Farewells

a critic, musician, activist, and scholar who was among the most trenchant of observers and writers on Black American culture, died Dec. 7 in New York City. He was 64. From 1987 to 2005, Tate was a staff writer for , where he covered many subjects but with a special focus on jazz, funk, hip-hop, and other musical forms. He also contributed to , , , , , , and .
