Back in time

Alan Cathcart’s recent report of Sammy Miller’s thoroughly deserved awards (AMCN Vol 71 No 14) brought fond memories back to me.

There weren’t many visitors to Sammy’s amazing Museum on New Year’s Day 2011. Towards the end of the day, I was honoured to be invited to join Sammy in his workshop, where he was working on his latest restoration of a Sunbeam. The legendary man was wonderfully open and enthusiastic and, upon learning I had come from London by rail, offered me a lift in his van back to the New Milton railway station!

The amazing museum is a must for those interested in the history and evolution of motorcycles, especially competition machines. If you ever manage to get there, allow plenty of time…
