THE LAST DOXFORD-ENGINED SHIP

The sale of the drilling ship Aban Ice to Indian breakers in August 2021 would not normally be considered particularly newsworthy. However, this is the last surviving vessel powered by a Doxford marine oil engine, albeit one built in France under licence in 1958 for the vessel Jean Schneider, of the Union Industrielle & Maritime (UIM) of Paris. Doxford engines, the last of which was built in 1980, were a significant British innovation, now consigned to history.
