FLYWHEELS being used in petrol-powered cars began way back at the turn of the last century, when designers bolted massive flywheels behind their one-or two-cylinder engines. The engine drove the flywheel, and the flywheel’s kinetic energy drove the car. Nowadays we have high-revving modified engines with still-sizeable flywheels, secured to the crank by anywhere from four to eight bolts. You would reckon this would be enough.
