The storm we had in late November brought foul and destructive winds to Galloway. I lay in bed and listened to slates blowing off the roof of my house like playing cards. The hay shed flew away on to the hill, taking large pieces of a cinder-block wall with it, and there were times during the worst night when it seemed like the world was ending.
Listening to the news through a battery-operated radio the next day,
