ucked away in a glacial valley in County, or “valley of two lakes”—was settled by Saint Kevin, a hermit who wanted to be closer to God in nature. Glendalough grew, becoming a center of learning and pilgrimage. The monastic city flourished in the eleventh and twelfth centuries but declined after its annexation by the diocese of Dublin. Today the ruins of the hermitage, monastery and churches still nestle amid mountains, rivers and, of course, lakes—a seamless blend of nature and Irish culture in one holy place.
