Astrology for The New Age
It is not well known in the larger culture, but the phrase “Time marches on” was actually coined by an astrologer, admittedly a somewhat unorthodox one, named Saluton VonMars, one of a long line of astrologers from a German military family from the late 19th century. Fortunately for 21st century Americans limited to a language largely stolen from the Germans, Saluton spoke fluent English, though with a distinct accent. He had, apparently, a particular expertise in the movements of planets from one sign to another, and, indeed, in the relationship between the signs altogether, with a particular interest in the way adjacent signs relate to each other. He was, by all accounts, a sufficiently imposing figure, standing six foot six in an era when not all that many members of our species exceeded six feet. He apparently garnered listeners as much from his physical imposingness as from the subjects about which he spoke, and would speak to anyone who would listen, saying that as we look at the zodiac, we get some insights into “the nature of time itself.”
People often questioned him about this, for the notion that time has some sort of “nature,” or that the flow of time has characteristics – well, this did not have any wider acceptance in Saluton’s time than it does in
