The big trophy in the Big Apple

It’s taken 26 years for the MLS Cup to make its way to New York City but, at the end of the 2021 season, the club bearing the city’s name triumphed in the play-offs to bring the trophy to the USA’s most populous area.

As a 2015 expansion side, this was only New York City FC’s seventh season in Major League Soccer, but big things have always been expected of a franchise that is part of one of football’s emerging global powers, the City Football Group.
