THE modern incarnation of Skoda has been one of the automotive world’s great success stories. Under Volkswagen’s stewardship, the Czech firm quickly became the go-to brand for pragmatic buyers looking for solid, well equipped cars sold at a reasonable price.
In recent years, Skoda’s position in the VW Group hierarchy has shifted a little, pushing its already excellent cars slightly upmarket – but still offering huge value for money when compared with equivalent offerings from its sister brands, SEAT, Volkswagen and Audi.
The very first Skoda Octavia was built between 1959 and 1971, but the name returned in 1996 on a model based on a Volkswagen platform and aimed squarely at the mainstream family car market.
