ORIGINALLY born out of Rover’s desire to revive the long-serving original, the all-new MINI arrived as a standalone brand under BMW ownership at the dawn of the new millennium. The new car took classic Mini design cues and successfully incorporated them into a stylish, fresh-faced supermini that proved deeply appealing to fashion-conscious buyers.
The new MINI (often referred to as the R50) was larger than its classic namesake, but still compact by contemporary supermini standards. Its round headlights, wheel-at-each-corner stance, trim-level names and retro-styled interior all harked back to the original, while a clamshell bonnet, floating-style roof and chunky wheelarches helped add a modern flourish. Some purists were highly unimpressed at the time, but the MINI has since sold in massive numbers and is now appreciated as a modern classic in its own right.
