2019’s starry murder-mystery was one of Hollywood’s last pre-pandemic hits, but following it has taken time: knotty plots don’t grow on trees, and COVID made it hard to (Disney+), one of last year’s highlights, pairs series co-creator Steve Martin with Martin Short and Selena Gomez as nosy neighbours who investigate a death in their chichi Manhattan apartment block, less out of a sense of existential threat than as something to do in the afternoons. While initially light in tone—there are podcast jokes—its mystery soon deepens, and Martin’s late-life romance with cellist Amy Ryan introduces notes of real poignancy. Classy, old-fashioned entertainment, of a kind you may have thought had died off.
