Variations on a theme USING WORLD FABRICS* IN QUILT PROJECTS

The expression ‘variations on a theme’ makes one think of music. Indeed, quilters are composers. Just as musicians arrange different notes to create mellifluous arrangements, so too, do quilters use fabric. Quilters create their own variations on themes by changing the colours, block placements, sashings, borders etc of familiar patterns.

We often marvel at the detail and precision found in traditional quilt patterns. Today’s projects are equally amazing. In addition to complex quilt designs, quilters can now take advantage of the variety of fabric available worldwide and use them in their work. Calicoes and broadcloth are now accented and accompanied by world fabrics such as Asian batiks and African brocades.

The versatility of quilting is what makes it so timeless and classic. Quilts can be traditional or contemporary. They can be improvisational or definitive. Quilts can be decorative, or they can be utilitarian… or they can be both. Quilts can also reflect the maker or mirror the
