hen Justinian ascended the throne in 527, the eastern Romans had lost control over the founding city of Rome over 50 years before. Since the Byzantines always considered themselves as Romans even from their new capital at Constantinople, it was a top priority to reclaim not just Rome but also the other former territories in the west. To accomplish this vital goal, Justinian turned to the most talented and trusted generals under his command, Belisarius and Narses.
