Course Française

The relationship between England and France is not always cosy, but there is one sport that brings the two countries together: racing. The French racing scene is on fire and many people here are eyeing it up and wanting to be part of it. The sheer volume of English trainers enthusiastically taking their horses across the water begs the question: just what is it about French racing that is making France the place to be?

One of England’s finest exports comes in the form of jumps trainer Louisa Carberry. She and her wonder horse, Docteur de Ballon, have taken France by storm, almost re-enacting by claiming back-to-back victories in one of the country’s most famous races, Le Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. Winning this race is roughly the equivalent to landing the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, yet it doesn’t really do it justice.
