BREAK WITH TRADITION

With Field contributor David Tomlinson arguing that ‘when it comes to dogs, especially working gundogs, most of us are inordinately conservative’ – and urging people to give Continental breeds, such as the Braque d’Auvergne [pictured] a go – people went out of their way to prove him wrong. Some mentioned having switched from labradors to spaniels and others embraced even more exotic breeds, from the Italian spinone to Hungarian wirehaired vizslas. As someone put it on Facebook, Fielders are clearly ‘ahead of the trend’.

MANDATORY FITNESS

Should dog walking be compulsory? The question, triggered by an animal-welfare proposal made by a German politician, saw Fielders object to what they perceived as meddling and unenforceable legislation, while stating emphatically that dogs need their exercise. As one poster put it, ‘If it’s not a pleasure taking your dog out for half an hour twice a day, you should rethink why you have dogs.’
