Northern and East Midlands Railway Class 153 fleets stood down
IN ADVANCE of the expiry of their dispensation to operate (as they are non-PRM compliant), both Northern and East Midlands Railway handed back their remaining Class 153s to Angel and Porterbrook after the timetable change on December 12. Their ORR dispensation had been due to expire at the end of 2021.
The final passenger working with Northern took place just over two weeks earlier, when, on November 23, No. 153307 formed the 2R84 07.17 Leeds-Manchester Vic with No. 158910. Later on in the same week, No. 153330 was used by Northern for driver training on the Monk Bretton branch. Four sets (Nos. 153328/331/332/363) spent around a week in store at Huddersfield, before running to Newton Heath on December 3. A further two sets, Nos. 153330/358, arrived at Newton Heath from Neville Hill on December 20.
East Midland Railway’s last ‘153’ workings took place on December 11, when No. 153308 was used on the Barton-on-Humber branch. Services on this line are now being operated by Class 156s.
