TURNING POINT

IT PAYS TO SUSPEND DISBELIEF AND SWA LLOW the questions swirling through your mind when presented with the Maserati MC20. There are, of course, so many questions. This is Maserati. Nothing is predictable; logic is an alien concept.

Does anyone really know what Maserati is at its very core? Formula 1 constructor back in the days of Fangio; producer of impossibly glamorous and esoteric coupes and saloons in the ’60s and ’70s; perennially on the edge of financial oblivion; relaunched, revamped and reinvented every few years but never quite achieving its goals and, in its latest guise, a company soon to have a range spanning from a Porsche Macan competitor to this new, McLaren Artura-rivalling supercar. What is Maserati? It’s a question too big to answer here and now. So, instead, let’s focus on a simpler question: what is the MC20? I genuinely can’t wait to find out.

We arrive at Maserati in the heart of Modena to find the area shrouded by the sort of fog and drizzle that the North York Moors would be proud to serve up, with knowledge gleaned from press releases and little more. It’s an intriguing car. Mysterious even, lost as it’s become in the mists of the pandemic. Throw in the trademark chaos of Maserati and the fact that Ferrari no longer has the heel of its boot on its neighbour’s throat and the MC20 is nothing short of fascinating.

Today is my favourite sort of day. Not a glossy launch with leather samples and bizarre lifestyle messages thrown at us in a high-end hotel, but a simple arrive and drive. Pick up the MC20 at 8am,
