Poetry in motion
OUR poetry-writing competition, which attracted nearly 200 entries from around the world, has been won by Duncan Darbishire, a retired doctor who secured the accolade with a powerful evocation of his childhood in rural Cumbria.
‘I don’t enter many competitions, but (), reflects on the writer’s recollection of growing up on a small sheep farm near Coniston Water. ‘So much of what we experience these days is through sight or sound, but we have other senses as well as the visual or auditory, so I wanted to explore the different ways memories can feel. There are so many ways in which we sense things—if you shut your eyes, for example, you know exactly where your hand is, although you can’t see it.’
