RECENTLY I visited one of my favourite places, Hay-on-Wye, famous for its second-hand bookshops. I was not to be disappointed and came away with my usual armful.
Among them was a copy of Ward Fowler’s Countryside – Impressions Of A Victorian Naturalist. This is an account of the birdwatching of an Oxford don from the 1880s to the 1920s. It is an eye-opening read for anyone interested in our native birdlife.
