You were a late bloomer, having turned professional aged 24. Was there ever a point when you thought you weren’t going to make it?

Not really, as I knew it was all my own doing. I turned pro late because of my attitude. It was never my ability, it was the way I applied myself. I wouldn’t turn up for some training sessions, as I just wanted to play five-a-side with my mates. Everyone would say I had the ability, it was a case of sorting myself out. By the time I finally did, I’d become a pro in the space of three months!

What was your dream back then – was it getting into the Football League or did you have loftier ambitions?

I always wanted to play at the highest level, in the Premier League – but I was saying
