In the bleak midwinter

A 5am call to a foaling mare was the last thing I expected in the first week of January. The mare had returned from the stud not in foal, so the owner decided to run her, more in hope than in expectation, with her three-year-old uncastrated colt in a distant field over the winter. The foaling date suggested that she had been covered in late January or early February.
