sean_carson@autovia.co.uk

THE last 12 months proved to be turbulent for the automotive sector. Yet despite this we still saw the innovation, the pace of development and the ingenious solutions car makers are known for come the fore, overcoming difficulties caused by Covid and the ongoing supply issues with semiconductors. This resilience and collective ability will also result in some brilliant new cars in 2022, as we look towards the next 12 months in the automotive world.

We’ve lined up 22 of the best and most important new cars coming this year, as a preview of what you can look forward to. All the models have something in common: they’re exciting and important offerings in their respective segments that will cause rivals in those classes to take note.

We’ve lined up everything from compact petrol-powered city cars to mainstream family SUVs, high-end EVs and premium off-roaders from supercar manufacturers, giving a broad overview of the new-car market and highlighting just how diverse the industry is in 2022.

Some cars will make their debuts this year, some will go on sale over the next 12 months, but each and every one of them will advance what new-car buyers have to choose from.

There’s something for everyone, no matter what your budget, needs or interests, so this evidence, and from our small snapshot of the future market here, it looks like we’ve never had things so good.

Toyota Aygo X

IT’S often said that the best things come in small packages – and for proof you need look no further than the all-new Toyota Aygo X. Ever-tightening emissions regulations and increasing costs have forced most manufacturers to slash city cars from their price lists, but Toyota is bucking the trend with its box-fresh baby.

In a twist on the traditional small-car formula, the Japanese firm’s entry-level model has been given a rugged SUV makeover, with chunky body cladding and a raised height. It’ll also be packed with eye-catching personalisation options, including funky body-coloured inserts and even a full-length fabric sunroof.

Despite its dinky dimensions, the newcomer should be roomier than its predecessor, because the Aygo X uses the TNGA-B platform from the Yaris supermini. This also means it will get advanced safety systems and a nine-inch HD Smart Connect infotainment system. It also carries over some of its predecessor’s quirky features, such as its pop-out rear windows.

All versions of the Aygo X will be powered by a 71bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit with a five-speed manual gearbox or an optional CVT automatic. Toyota is targeting 60mpg and CO2 emissions of just 109g/km, with these low running costs helping to offset the slightly high £14,795 starting price.
