Peaceful PALETTE

Val Butler traces her decorating style to a long-ago gift from her grandmother. “It all started with a jadeite coffee cup that she gave me,” the Watertown, South Dakota, resident explains. That gift not only inspired her current color choices, which feature a spring-fresh mix of greens and blues, but also what eventually grew to be a 300-piece collection of the verdant vintage tableware.

She shows off the enviable 1950s-era collectibles throughout her 2,400-square-foot ranch-style home, where she has lived with her husband, Jim, since 2009. The four-bedroom house is situated on 5 acres that offer plenty of space for the couple’s three-legged dog, Roxy, to play.

Once a fan of bolder, brighter colors, Val decided to lighten up a few years ago.
