HOP AND SKIP COD FISHING

HOPPING AND SIPPING LURES for cod warrants an in-depth look at all the components that make up this devastatingly effective boat fishing method, particularly as January to late March can be one of the best times to target inshore cod, although the method can be used throughout the year.

It’s called hopping for cod or even hop and skip fishing because the lure needs to work exactly like a kangaroo hops or a boxer skips when in training.

It’s the job of the boat skipper to put you over good ground but that in itself is not enough. You, as the angler, need to do your bit and make the most of the ground feature.

ROUND TYPES

Such a location could be a mixed ground bottom comprised of broken stone and rocks interspersed with sand. Here you’ll find the fish are in small groups clustered tightly around the bigger clumps of rocks with the sand usually barren of cod.

Depending on the speed of the drift it’s likely you’ll get the chance of only one fish from each patch of rock. Therefore, concentration is important because you’ve got those longer periods of little if any action broken up
