The tenth edition of the Asia Pacific Triennial (APT10) featured 69 projects by artists and collectives from (2021), a 12-meter-long backstrap-weaving loom with strands of human hair collected in the towns of La Trinidad and Bontoc, extends the artist’s use of Spanish-colonial-era stones, textiles, and other items to reflect on the material culture and indigeneity of the Cordillera region of the Philippines. Gordon Hookey presented his pair of massive murals (2015–17 and 2021), each offering a retelling of Eurocentric colonial history, with the more recent version depicting six scenes celebrating local Aboriginal figures, from resistance heroes to cricketers. Community and collaboration were emphasized in presentations by the Bajau Laut people of Sabah, the Gidree Bawlee Foundation of Arts from northwestern Bangladesh, and the Seleka International Arts Society Initiative in Tonga. In addition, the exhibition “Between Earth and Sky: Indigenous Contemporary Art From Taiwan” was co-curated by Etan Pavavalung and Manray Hsu, bringing the island’s traditional culture into dialogue with those of the Pacific and Australasia.
