With a curatorial team led by Andrés Jaque and comprising You Mi, Marina Otero Verzier, Lucia (2006/2021) installation of knotted, deep red, unspun wool—reprised from an earlier incarnation at the disappearing El Plomo glacier—highlighted the creative powers of women as an antithesis to capitalism’s environmental destruction. Michael Wang’s installation (2021) is a refrigerated room that recreates a glacial landscape on top of piles of earth, using water from the Yangtze river and electricity from the Three Gorges Dam. Zadie Xa and Benito Mayor Vallejo’s (2020–21) is a multimedia installation with soft sculptures of orcas encircling a central oracle that offers a meditation on the relationships between humans and sea creatures. Conjuring a desolate underwater realm, sound artist and musician Pan Daijing’s installation (2021) features the voices of opera singers cascading like a sonic waterfall onto a bed of snowy white quartz.
