Having all of our lower end parts available and checked, it’s time for the bottom end assembly. We’ll do a trial assembly or two, dial in the cam, and check for free rotation and rod to case clearance. Our day to assemble has come!

When using stock VW rods and a 74mm stroke crank, it’s hard to predict if there will be any rod to case clearance issues. For the purposes of this article we are using bone-stock VW “B” rods to illustrate what the average builder might encounter.
