N 27 JANUARY 1967, a fire during a preflight test in the command module of what was to have been the first crewed mission claimed the lives of three American astronauts. Edward White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee died at Cape Kennedy’s Launch Complex 34, Florida, during what became known as the Apollo 1 Astronauts
