Perhaps the best drama of the year was also one of the first. It’s a Sin, Russell T Davies’ latest masterpiece, was a celebration of love and community, as well as an indictment of the state’s response to the Aids epidemic. Heartbreaking, but always emotionally honest and full of humour, this was incredible television.

– another vital drama from Channel 4 – was the first great Covid drama, shining a light on the criminal neglect of people in care homes. explored poverty and homelessness as Alex (Margaret Qualley) leaves an emotionally abusive relationship and, with her toddler, is forced to navigate the labyrinth of bureaucracy that hides the lack of any form of safety net.
